Constructed in 1917, the engineering marvel that is Ballard Locks in Seattle has allowed ships to pass between Lake Washington and Puget Sound for over a century, skilfully preventing the mixing of saltwater and fresh water. Explore the history of the locks - and how the specially-constructed 'fish ladder' has become vital for migrating salmon - with a free tour of the locks at 2pm this Friday, beginning from the Visitor Center.
