Discovered seemingly by chance in 1835, Margate is home to a vast underground grotto where 70ft of passages are bedecked with an extraordinary 4.6 million shells, in intricate and possibly symbolic patterns. And nobody knows how or why it got there! See them yourself and make up your own mind - the Shell Grotto on Grotto Hill in Margate is open between 10am and 5pm.
